Congratulations to three FOE Diabetes Research Center members on receiving new grant funding for the NIH. Drs. Stefan Strack, Mark Yorek and Yuriy Usachev have received a grant from the National Institutes of Diabetes Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) entitled “Targeting mitochondrial fission for neuroprotection in diabetic neuropathy” for a total award of $1,702,888 over four years.
Dr. Strack, the lead PI on this proposal says “This multi-PI grant proposal examines how diabetes affects the structure and function of mitochondria in nerve cells. The proposed studies also test the idea that preventing mitochondrial failure in nerve cells can restore nerve function in diabetes. The results from this research may lead to new treatments for peripheral diabetic neuropathy. Preliminary data for the grant application was made possible by a Pilot & Feasibility Grant awarded by the FOEDRC.”
