Charles Brenner has helped find a way to prevent nerve damage caused by chemotherapy drugs. The study has focused on a set of biochemical pathways that are critical for the survival of nerves. Brenner, along with Richard Goodman, a researcher at the Oregon Health and Science University, plan to extend their research to study neuroprotection in mice and rats. The end goal is determining whether the findings might be translated into new therapies to help prevent chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) in cancer patients.
