DRC member Wei Bao has received national press coverage including a segment on NPR for his recent publication, “Association of Normal-Weight Central Obesity With All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality Among Postmenopausal Women”. The article investigates that older women with a normal BMI are still at high risk for obesity related health issues. The condition, known as “central obesity”, a concentration of fat around the abdomen can occur even if it’s not enough to shift a person’s BMI into the “obese range”. The study found that a waist size over 35 inches significantly increased the risk of an early death for older women, even if their BMI was in the normal range.
