On Saturday, December 7th, 2019 the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center held their annual retreat. The retreat was held at the University of Iowa’s Levitt center where DRC faculty and trainees came together for a day of research and celebration of the department’s continued success.
The day begin with opening remarks by Director, Dr. Dale Abel and an update on the Metabolic Phenotyping Core followed by new faculty member presentations by Dr. Ayotunde Dokun, Dr. M. Nedim Ince and Dr. Sukirth Ganesan.
This year faculty broke into group brainstorming sessions where they came up with tweet like questions crucial to diabetes research. In our session two, the questions were randomized and posed to the second set of brainstorming groups, who then attempted to answer them.
Our guest speaker Dr. Fumihiko Urano from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis gave a presentation titled, Endoplasmic Reticulum Medicine: Cure for Beta-cell, Neuronal and Retinal Degeneration in Wolfram syndrome.
Following Dr. Urano’s presentation there was a poster session including nine different posters from trainees and faculty members displaying their research.
Later, we heard from four trainees, Matt Harris, Kyle Flippo, Erica Gansemer and Sara Sebag about their current research projects and finally we concluded the day with final remarks from Dr. Abel and a group photo.
Thank you to everyone who came out to join us in celebrating yet another successful year for the Diabetes Research Center!
