Abel awarded $3.8 million grant to lead one of four AHA research networks

Dr. E. Dale Abel has been awarded a four-year $3.8 million grant from the American Heart Association. The grant will be used to investigate mechanisms that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in people with type 2 diabetes. Dr. Abel’s role will be to oversee and maintain a Strategically Focused Research Network of three projects in partnership with other UI departments and the Massachusetts General Hospital. The goal is to observe the relationship between novel secreted molecules from liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle that may directly or indirectly lead to damage of the heart and blood vessels in those who have diabetes.
