Last Thursday evening, Dr. Abel was honored as a 2018 History Maker by the African American Museum of Iowa at The Hotel at Kirkwood Center in Cedar Rapids. At the end of the evening Dr. Abel took the stage, and thanked his family, his colleagues in the Department of Internal Medicine, and the members of his lab for their support in helping to contribute to his successes.
Dr. Abel took to citing mentors of his own life, from family that surrounded him in his Caribbean upbringing, to scientists who guided him through a fellowship at Harvard Medical School, to Dr. Daryl Granner, who brought him to the University of Iowa. Dr. Abel gave a piece of advice to the audience, “every one of us in this room should commit ourselves to being a mentor to someone else, to many others. It is when we do that, our community is stronger and more resilient.”
